Washing machines: buying guide
Compare drum capacity, programme-specific energy, installation fit and the loads your household really washes.

Choose a washing machine around your normal laundry, not simply the largest drum on offer. Record the size and frequency of your usual loads, any bulky items and the programmes you expect to use. Then compare installation requirements and the energy information for an equivalent programme and capacity. A rating letter alone cannot settle the purchase.
Which type suits your home?
Freestanding machine
Check the complete depth including protrusions, door movement and hose clearance. A nominal width does not establish that it will slide into your particular space.
Integrated machine
Compare cabinetry, door-fixing compatibility and installation requirements as part of the purchase. Do not assume that an existing furniture panel fits a new model without checking.
Washer-dryer alternative
Consider this when one appliance must do both jobs. Compare washing and drying capacities separately, and assess complete wash-and-dry energy rather than the washing figure alone.
What to check before buying
Usable load and programmes
Check the permitted load for the programmes you actually need. A headline drum capacity does not mean every quick, delicate or specialist cycle accepts that quantity.
Energy and water basis
Read the exact product information sheet, including the unit and named test programme. Compare equivalent conditions; do not assume that a per-100-cycle value describes every wash you run.
Spin and practical noise
Check the stated spin noise, programme duration and installation instructions. A spin-speed number is not a complete measure of cleaning, fabric care or how a machine will behave on your floor.
Maintenance and service
Look for clear filter, drawer and seal-cleaning access and a service route for your postcode. Read warranty exclusions and compare availability of common replacement parts.
What ownership really involves
Include delivery, disconnection, installation and old-appliance removal in the upfront figure. Electricity, water, detergent and repairs are different costs. Our calculator estimates electricity only, so do not present its output as the entire annual laundry bill.
A common comparison mistake
Comparing a large machine's energy label with a smaller machine without considering usable load can be misleading. The quickest programme is also not automatically the lowest-energy programme; use the model's documented figures for the task.
Compare running costs
A hypothetical label of 50kWh per 100 cycles, with four corresponding cycles each week. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.
Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.
The number is an invented example. Change it to the exact model's product sheet, and remember other temperatures, programmes and loads can differ. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.
Your questions answered
Should I choose the biggest drum available?
Only if it suits the loads you will regularly wash and fits your home. Check programme-specific load limits and consider whether normal loads would use the extra capacity before paying for it.
How do I use a kWh-per-100-cycles label?
Divide the figure by 100 to obtain the specified test-cycle energy, then multiply by your assumed annual cycles. Keep the test programme and load assumptions visible rather than treating it as every wash's consumption.
