Tumble dryers: buying guide

Compare drying technology, programme-specific consumption and installation conditions for equivalent laundry loads.

Start with how many loads need machine drying, the fabrics involved and the room where the dryer will stand. Then compare exact-model information for the same usable capacity and programme. Energy letters and terminology have changed over time, so inspect the actual consumption unit instead of mixing figures from different label generations or markets.

Which type suits your home?

Heat-pump design

Compare purchase cost, programme duration, permitted room conditions and documented cycle energy. Do not translate a technology label into an assumed saving for every load or every model.

Other condenser design

Check moisture collection or drainage, the published programme figures and installation instructions. Compare like-for-like loads rather than assuming all machines described as condenser dryers have the same energy use.

Vented installation

Assess only if a suitable route is available and the model permits the planned installation. Include the cost and practicality of the required venting rather than comparing the appliance price alone.

What to check before buying

  1. Label unit and programme

Find whether the sheet uses annual energy, per-cycle energy or per-100-cycle energy. Keep the named programme and load conditions visible when converting the figure into an annual estimate.

  2. The room and clearances

Check the permitted ambient conditions and service space. A location that physically accommodates the cabinet is not automatically suitable for the chosen drying technology or maintenance routine.

  3. Load and fabric needs

Compare programme-specific capacity, supported fabrics and controls you will use. A large maximum load does not apply to every delicate or specialist programme, and drying time may matter to your routine.

  4. Cleaning and drainage

Read how lint filters, other accessible parts and water collection are maintained. Check whether a drain connection or approved stacking kit is included, optional or unsuitable for the location.

What ownership really involves

Compare installed purchase price with annual electricity at your own drying frequency. If a more expensive option reduces the energy figure, calculate simple payback without assuming future tariffs or guaranteed repair costs. Replacing a working appliance needs a wider decision than energy alone.

A common comparison mistake

Do not compare an old annual label with a new per-100-cycle label as if both numbers were annual kWh. Do not fabricate a hands-on drying result from a product sheet; verify performance priorities with suitable independent evidence.

YOUR NUMBERS, YOUR ESTIMATE

Compare running costs

A hypothetical 150kWh per 100 drying cycles, with three matching cycles each week. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.

Scenario A / year£58.50234.00 kWh · £4.87 per calendar month
Scenario B / year£58.50234.00 kWh · £4.87 per calendar month

Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.

This is an illustrative input, not an average heat-pump result. Check the unit on the exact label and the rules applicable to the product's market. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.

Your questions answered

Is the lowest label number always the cheapest dryer to own?

No. Normalise the energy unit, match capacity and programme, and add installation and purchase cost. The lower running-cost model may or may not recover an upfront premium within your ownership period.

Can I estimate every programme from the eco figure?

Treat the label as a defined test scenario. Your loads, moisture levels, fabrics and selected programmes can differ. Use documented programme data or measured energy when you need a closer estimate.
