Washer-dryers: buying guide
Separate wash-only and complete wash-and-dry figures, and check how much laundry can move through both stages.

A washer-dryer is a space decision as well as an energy decision. Start with the laundry you need fully dried and the space available for separate machines. Compare the machine's washing and drying limits independently, because the load you can wash need not be the load you can dry in the same session. Plan the full routine before comparing headline capacity.
Which type suits your home?
All-in-one washer-dryer
Useful when one footprint must handle both tasks. Check complete programme duration, drying capacity and what you must remove or rearrange between stages for your normal load.
Washer plus separate dryer
Compare this if floor space or an approved stacking arrangement is available. Include both purchase prices and the practical benefit of washing and drying different loads independently.
Washer with another drying method
Consider this when machine drying is occasional. Assess the actual space, timing and household conditions needed, rather than buying a drying function that will rarely be used.
What to check before buying
Two capacity figures
Read the washing and drying specifications separately. Work out whether your largest normal wash must be split before drying, and count any additional complete drying cycles in the cost comparison.
Correct energy field
Identify wash-only consumption and complete wash-and-dry consumption on the product sheet. Do not add a combined-cycle value to a wash-only value for the same load and count the washing twice.
Your programme sequence
Check whether the programmes you need can run consecutively at the intended load. Allow for the full elapsed time, including any intervention between stages, rather than relying on a shortest-cycle headline.
Water and installation
Check water-use information, drainage and installation requirements for the exact technology. Do not assume every washer-dryer uses water or exhausts moisture in the same way.
What ownership really involves
Compare the complete installed cost with the realistic alternative, including any stacking kit or extra service space. Calculate wash-only sessions and combined sessions separately if both occur in a normal week. Add water and repairs outside the electricity estimate.
A common comparison mistake
A large wash capacity and an efficient wash-only rating do not establish economical full-load drying. Keep each mode's load, test programme and energy unit attached to its figure before drawing conclusions about a particular model.
Compare running costs
A hypothetical complete wash-and-dry label of 300kWh per 100 cycles, used three times a week. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.
Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.
This is not the specification of the source's example model. It represents complete cycles only; do not add washing energy for those same loads again. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.
Your questions answered
Can I dry everything from a full wash at once?
Check the exact drying limit and programme instructions. If the normal wash exceeds that supported quantity, plan to remove items or split drying into separate batches and include that in your comparison.
Which figure belongs in the cost calculator?
Use wash-only kWh for wash-only sessions and combined wash-and-dry kWh for complete sessions. For mixed use, calculate the two groups separately, then add their costs without counting the same wash twice.
