Compare handheld irons and steam-generator systems around your laundry and storage.

Choose an iron around the clothes you routinely press and the time you spend at the board. A large steam-generator base may suit repeated sessions but take up more storage than a conventional iron. Compare handling, tank access and fabric controls before headline steam figures. Your board and working space are part of the buying decision too.
Which type suits your home?
Conventional steam iron
Check the complete weight with water, grip and filling arrangement. Compare how you reach the controls and whether the cable moves comfortably around your normal ironing position.
Steam-generator system
Include the base dimensions and hose in your space assessment. Establish where the base can sit according to its manual, how the tank is removed and what the descaling routine involves.
Garment steamer alternative
Consider this for the specific finishing jobs you need, rather than assuming it produces the same result as pressing. Check fabric guidance and hanging space before treating it as a direct replacement.
What to check before buying
Fabric control
Read how the model handles temperature and steam settings. Match those instructions to garment care labels, especially for mixed loads of delicate and heavier fabrics.
Water and limescale
Find the manufacturer's approved water guidance and cleaning process. Compare the cost and availability of any specified cartridges; a familiar descaling product is not automatically permitted in a different iron.
Practical session length
Check warm-up, refill arrangements and permitted continuous use. A tank capacity figure alone does not establish how long your personal routine will take or how often you must stop.
Board and safe storage
Assess board stability, cable reach and the space needed for cooling and storage. Follow the exact appliance and board instructions instead of assuming all generator bases fit any ironing-board rest.
What ownership really involves
Compare purchase price, any water-treatment consumables and repair support. To estimate electricity, include warm-up and the whole powered session. The thermostat may cycle, so rated watts multiplied by elapsed time is a full-power assumption rather than a measured average. A repeatable wall-meter measurement is more informative for your routine.
A common comparison mistake
Steam-output numbers and wattage are not interchangeable, and neither proves how quickly you will finish a basket. Do not attach an electricity-saving percentage to a feature unless comparable consumption data supports it.

A hypothetical 2,200 W iron powered for 30 minutes, twice weekly. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.

Your questions answered
Will a steam generator always cost more to run?
Compare measured electricity for the same basket and finish. Rated power alone cannot settle this because warm-up, cycling, steam settings and total session length differ.
Should automatic shut-off decide the purchase?
Check what the feature actually detects and the conditions in the manual. It can be a useful control, but it does not replace following the appliance's operating and storage instructions.
