Stand mixers: buying guide
Compare recipe capacities, head clearance and attachment costs before choosing a mixer by bowl litres.

Start with the heaviest recipe and smallest batch you expect to make regularly. A mixer that handles a large cake mixture may have a different limit for bread dough or whisking a small quantity. Consider whether it will live on the worktop: lifting and storing a heavy mixer after every use can change how useful it becomes.
Which type suits your home?
Tilt-head mixer
Check access when the head is raised and the bowl is being removed. Measure the available height under cupboards as well as the machine's closed dimensions.
Bowl-lift mixer
Compare bowl access, working height and how attachments are changed. Decide whether the format suits your largest recipes without making everyday small batches awkward.
Hand mixer instead
A useful alternative for occasional lighter mixing. Compare it if most recipes do not justify a permanent worktop appliance or a collection of specialist attachments.
What to check before buying
Recipe-specific limits
Find maximum dough, flour and mixture quantities for the exact machine. Do not translate bowl litres into a universal batch capacity or assume every speed is permitted for heavy dough.
Small-quantity performance
Check what the manual says about minimum quantities and attachments. If you often whisk one small portion, ask whether a smaller bowl or a separate hand tool is needed.
Accessory compatibility
List the whisk, dough hook, beater and optional attachments you expect to use. Confirm which are included and whether attachments fit this exact model rather than a similar-looking range.
Handling and location
Measure clearance for opening, bowl removal and ingredient addition. Check empty weight and how you will move the machine before choosing a large format for occasional use.
What ownership really involves
Price the accessories and spare bowls you actually need, and compare service arrangements. A versatile attachment hub can be valuable, but it is not a saving if the additional functions duplicate appliances you already have and use comfortably.
A common comparison mistake
Motor watts and bowl volume are not a tested measure of kneading capability. Follow speed, batch and duty restrictions. Avoid extrapolating a manufacturer's recipe capacity for one mixer to other machines with the same bowl size.
Compare running costs
A hypothetical 1,000W input for ten minutes in each of two weekly mixing sessions. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.
Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.
Actual motor draw varies with the mixture and speed. The example is not a permitted continuous kneading time for a particular mixer. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.
Your questions answered
Can I choose a mixer using bowl litres alone?
No. Compare the stated limits for your actual recipe type, along with minimum quantities and the attachment required. The same nominal volume can be associated with different working restrictions.
Will a stand mixer reduce electricity costs?
That is not established merely by buying one. Measure the task if energy matters, but give proper weight to convenience, capacity and the cost of attachments when deciding whether the purchase is worthwhile.
