Blenders: buying guide

Match the jug or handheld format to your ingredients, batch size and cleaning routine.

List three jobs you expect to do most often, such as blending a single drink, processing a larger cold batch or finishing soup. Those jobs need different containers and handling. Choose around usable quantities and permitted ingredients before motor watts. A powerful-sounding specification cannot tell you whether the jug and blade arrangement suits your recipes.

Which type suits your home?

Jug blender

A starting point for repeated batches in one container. Compare minimum and maximum working quantities, the lid design and how comfortably you can lift the filled jug.

Personal blender

Consider it for individual portions and direct drinking containers. Check whether replacement cups and seals are available and whether your usual ingredients fit the manufacturer's restrictions.

Hand blender

Useful when you want to blend in a suitable vessel. Compare reach, weight, detachable parts and the containers recommended by the maker rather than assuming every pan or jug is suitable.

What to check before buying

  1. Working volume

Distinguish the jug's total size from permitted liquid or ingredient levels. A smaller batch may also need a minimum quantity to circulate properly; inspect the exact instructions.

  2. Ingredient permissions

Check whether the model allows the hot liquids, ice or hard ingredients you intend to use. Do not treat a preset name as permission to ignore the manual's restrictions.

  3. Cleaning and handling

Look at how seals, blades and lids are accessed for cleaning, and which parts may enter a dishwasher. Factor in the weight of the jug when full, not only empty.

  4. Accessories you need

Price the cups, chopping attachments and replacement seals you would actually use. A large accessory bundle may take valuable storage space without replacing the separate appliance you already own.

What ownership really involves

Short blending sessions can make container convenience and spare-part availability more important than small differences in electricity. Compare the complete task, including repeated batches, and check the duty limits before planning frequent heavy processing.

A common comparison mistake

Do not put hot liquid in a sealed personal blending cup unless the exact manufacturer instructions expressly permit that use. Avoid extrapolating claims about a particular motor or programme into an independent comparison of finished food texture.

YOUR NUMBERS, YOUR ESTIMATE

Compare running costs

A hypothetical 600W blender operated for two minutes per session, five times a week. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.

Scenario A / year£1.305.20 kWh · £0.11 per calendar month
Scenario B / year£1.305.20 kWh · £0.11 per calendar month

Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.

This example ignores changes in motor load and standby. Respect the model's maximum processing time and cooling requirements. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.

Your questions answered

Is motor wattage enough to compare performance?

No. It describes an electrical input rating, not a measured blending result. Match the ingredients, quantity and permitted processing time, then consult appropriate independent tests if texture performance is decisive.

Can a blender replace a food processor?

Only for overlapping tasks supported by the exact attachments. If slicing, grating or controlled chopping is the main job, compare those functions directly rather than assuming a blending jug will perform them.
