Food processors: buying guide
Buy the bowl, discs and feed tube that suit your prep tasks, rather than the largest attachment count.

A food processor is most useful when its attachments match repeated preparation jobs. Write down whether you chiefly slice vegetables, grate ingredients, chop small batches or make dough. Then check the working capacity for those tasks. A large bowl can be inconvenient for small quantities, while an impressive accessory list can hide the absence of the one disc you need.
Which type suits your home?
Compact processor or chopper
Consider this for smaller repeated quantities. Check the permitted minimum batch and whether the supplied blades support your ingredients; compact size is not a substitute for function.
Full-size processor
Useful when bowl capacity and dedicated slicing or grating discs matter. Compare the usable quantities and handling of a full bowl rather than the advertised total litres alone.
Processor with blender attachments
Potentially useful for a mixed routine. Check which jobs each attachment handles, how much storage the kit needs and whether it genuinely replaces two machines for you.
What to check before buying
Required discs
Identify the slice thickness, grating size or dicing function you actually need. Confirm that the relevant attachment is included, compatible and available separately if it wears or breaks.
Feed tube and preparation
Compare the opening with ingredients you often prepare. Check whether food must still be cut down first, and whether the supplied pusher and lid are comfortable to use.
Different working limits
Look separately at dry ingredients, liquids and dough capacities. They need not equal the bowl's total volume, so compare the appropriate limit for your most demanding recipe.
Storage and cleaning
Find space for sharp discs, the lid and spare bowls as well as the motor unit. Read which parts can be washed by your preferred method before choosing a complex bundle.
What ownership really involves
Attachments and replacement lids can affect long-term value more than occasional motor use. Check availability and exact model compatibility. If your main job is bread or cake mixing, also compare a stand mixer before choosing a processor for its dough setting.
A common comparison mistake
A processor, blender and stand mixer overlap but are not interchangeable. Do not use a high motor rating or a large total bowl size as evidence that every task can be performed at that maximum quantity.
Compare running costs
A hypothetical 800W processor running for three minutes in each of three weekly sessions. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.
Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.
Motor load and intermittent operation vary. This is illustrative electricity use and does not override the model's duty limits. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.
Your questions answered
Should I buy the biggest bowl I can afford?
Only if it works for both your normal and largest batches. Check minimum practical quantities and storage needs; a large bowl that struggles to gather a small mixture may not fit your daily routine.
Are optional attachments a safe future upgrade?
Verify the compatibility list and current availability first. Do not base a purchase on a vague promise that accessories exist for a related model or that an attachment will remain available indefinitely.
