Slow cookers: buying guide
Choose working capacity, pot design and controls around the meals you will genuinely cook.

Decide whether you are cooking one evening meal, preparing several portions for later or keeping an occasional extra dish ready. Compare the usable fill range and pot shape with those plans. A slow cooker that is much larger than your normal recipe can be inconvenient, while a compact pot may not fit the ingredients you buy.
Which type suits your home?
Simple manual cooker
A starting point when you will manage the timing yourself. Check the available settings and what happens when cooking finishes rather than assuming it automatically changes mode.
Programmable model
Consider it if a supported timing routine is genuinely useful. Confirm what the timer controls and follow the manufacturer's food-handling instructions; a timer does not make every delay appropriate.
Hob-compatible cooking pot
Potentially convenient for preparation in one vessel. Verify that the removable pot is explicitly approved for your hob type instead of assuming a metal-looking pot can be used on a hob.
What to check before buying
Usable fill range
Check the permitted minimum and maximum quantities for your recipes. The headline litres describe a vessel, not a guarantee that every quantity or shape of ingredient cooks appropriately.
Pot shape and handling
Compare access, handles and the weight of a filled removable pot. Consider where you will place it when serving and whether its shape fits your planned meals and storage.
Settings and holding
Read how low, high, automatic and keep-warm modes behave. Decide which you need and include holding time when measuring electricity rather than comparing only the active cooking stage.
Cleaning requirements
Confirm which parts are removable and which cleaning methods are allowed. Check lid and seal replacement availability, particularly if you plan to use the appliance several times a week.
What ownership really involves
Compare energy per completed meal with the method it would replace, using equivalent portions and including any separate browning or preparation stage. A lower power rating running for many hours is not automatically the cheapest way to cook every recipe.
A common comparison mistake
Do not multiply the nameplate rating by a guessed duration and describe the result as measured consumption. Controls may cycle. Follow recipe and model instructions for safe preparation and holding rather than inventing delay or cooking rules.
Compare running costs
A hypothetical complete meal using 0.8kWh, cooked three times per week. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.
Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.
This is an invented session-energy example, not a model measurement. Include additional preparation and holding energy when relevant. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.
Your questions answered
Does low wattage guarantee lower cooking cost?
No. Total energy depends on duration and control cycling. Compare the complete task, including preparation and keep-warm, with the alternative method used for the same number of portions.
Is a large cooker better for batch cooking?
It can be, if the intended batch is within the working limits and the pot is manageable. Check where portions will go afterwards and whether the larger appliance also suits your normal smaller meals.
