Multi-cookers: buying guide
Choose the cooking modes, safe working capacity and lid arrangement you will actually use.

A multi-cooker can combine several jobs, but the useful combination depends on your cooking routine. List the modes you expect to use in a normal month and identify any appliance it genuinely replaces. Then compare working capacity, lid access and cleaning. A long list of presets should not distract from the basic practicalities of lifting, filling and storing it.
Which type suits your home?
Pressure-cooking multi-cooker
Check the pressure functions and exact working limits for your recipes. Include preparation, pressurisation and release time when comparing the complete workflow rather than just the programmed cooking minutes.
Multi-cooker with air-crisp modes
Consider it when both moist and dry cooking are regular tasks. Verify which accessories and lids are needed, and whether a combined sequence requires rearranging hot components.
Simpler single-purpose alternative
A slow cooker, rice cooker or air fryer may be easier if one task dominates. Compare those formats before paying for capabilities that will rarely leave the menu.
What to check before buying
Mode-specific capacity
Read the limits separately for pressure cooking, foaming ingredients and other modes. A total pot volume is not a safe working-fill guide, and limits can differ by recipe type.
Lids and storage
Check whether the lid is hinged, removable or swapped for another. Measure the height and worktop clearance needed to open it, and find storage for every accessory supplied.
Complete task time
Allow for heat-up, any pressure build-up, release and finishing stages. Compare your available time with that whole sequence instead of treating the displayed countdown as the entire meal duration.
Maintenance and support
Look for replacement seals, valves and cooking pots with exact compatibility. Read the cleaning routine before purchase and check the service route for components that are essential to operation.
What ownership really involves
Add separately required accessories and replacement seals to the purchase cost. Treat each cooking mode as its own energy task. Savings are only meaningful when the appliance replaces a method you would otherwise use for the same food and portions.
A common comparison mistake
Do not improvise pressure-fill or release instructions. Follow the exact model manual and recipe guidance. One maker's release sequence or accessory rule should never be generalised to every machine sold as a multi-cooker.
Compare running costs
A hypothetical full cooking session using 0.65kWh, three times a week. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.
Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.
This is an example input, not a measured programme figure or a claim of savings against another cooking method. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.
Your questions answered
Can one machine replace several appliances?
Only where its supported modes, working quantities and practical workflow cover your real jobs. Check any compromises in access, cleaning and simultaneous cooking before counting the value of appliances it supposedly replaces.
How should I compare electricity use?
Measure a complete recipe sequence, including heat-up and finishing. If a comparison uses only the pressure-cooking countdown or only the air-crisp stage, it does not represent the whole meal.
