Rice cookers: buying guide
Translate uncooked-rice cup capacity into your normal portions, then check minimum batches and keep-warm use.

Choose a rice cooker for the quantity and type of rice you prepare most often. Capacity descriptions can mix uncooked-rice cups, litres and multi-cooking volumes, so establish what each number means before comparing machines. Also decide whether you want a fresh batch for one meal or a longer supported holding routine, because those are different energy and ownership patterns.
Which type suits your home?
Basic rice cooker
Consider it when you want a straightforward supported rice routine. Check minimum and maximum batches and whether the controls and supplied measures are clear for your usual rice.
Programmable rice cooker
Potentially useful for different rice programmes and scheduling. Verify the actual settings you need and read the manual's handling rules instead of paying simply for a larger programme count.
Induction or specialist format
Compare it on the rice tasks and quantities you need. A different heating system or premium description alone does not establish a better result or lower total ownership cost.
What to check before buying
Uncooked-rice measurement
Check whether the stated cup capacity refers to uncooked rice and which measuring cup is supplied. Do not substitute a standard kitchen cup without checking the model's instructions.
Small-batch limits
Find the smallest supported quantity for your normal rice variety. A cooker suited to a large batch may be awkward if you mainly make one or two portions at a time.
Different rice limits
Read capacities and programmes for the types you actually cook. Do not assume a white-rice capacity applies unchanged to brown rice, porridge or multi-cooking modes.
Bowl and steam-path care
Check coating care, lid cleaning and replacement inner-bowl availability. Decide how the appliance will fit under cupboards and whether you can remove and wash the relevant parts conveniently.
What ownership really involves
Measure complete cooking sessions and any keep-warm period separately. If you are comparing a rice cooker with a hob or multi-cooker you already own, include the new purchase price and make the comparison for the same quantity of finished rice.
A common comparison mistake
Nominal pot litres are not automatically cooked-rice portions. Follow the supplied measuring and filling system, and do not invent storage or holding rules from another machine's programme description.
Compare running costs
A hypothetical 0.3kWh cooking batch, five times per week. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.
Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.
The example excludes keep-warm. It is not a tested figure for a capacity, rice variety or cooker technology. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.
Your questions answered
Why do two similar-sized cookers quote different capacities?
They may describe different quantities or permitted uses. Compare uncooked-rice capacity, physical dimensions and the relevant programme limits side by side before treating the figures as equivalent.
Should keep-warm energy be included?
Yes, if you use it. Measure the entire period you intend to hold rice under the manufacturer's instructions. A cooking-only reading does not describe a session that then remains on for several hours.
