Hair dryers: buying guide
Compare comfortable handling, useful heat controls and attachments for your actual routine.

Start with how you dry and style your hair, the time you normally spend and whether someone else will use the same appliance. Compare weight, balance, controls and the attachments you need before maximum wattage. This guide does not test styling performance or make hair-health claims. Its electricity example is simply a way to put your own power and session length into pounds.
Which type suits your home?
Full-size dryer
Consider balance in the hand, cable reach and how the intake is kept clear. Ask whether the published weight includes the cable and attachment before comparing two apparently similar figures.
Compact or folding dryer
Assess the compromise between storage and the controls you need at home. If you plan to travel, check the exact voltage and plug requirements rather than assuming a small appliance works everywhere.
Dryer with styling attachments
List the accessories you actually intend to use and check compatibility with the exact model. A larger accessory bundle is poor value if it duplicates tools you already own or takes up unwanted storage.
What to check before buying
Heat and airflow controls
Check whether heat and speed can be adjusted separately and how a cool setting is operated. Read the exact instructions for attachments rather than inferring permitted use from their appearance.
Weight and grip
Consider one-handed handling and the positions you use during a complete session. A display, switch or trigger that looks convenient in a photograph may be awkward in your normal grip.
Cleaning access
Find the filter or intake-cleaning instructions before purchase. Check whether a replacement part is available and what routine the manufacturer requires to keep the appliance in its intended condition.
Support and compatibility
Record the model number, warranty route and attachment codes. A familiar brand name does not guarantee that accessories from an older generation fit a newer dryer.
What ownership really involves
Estimate the powered minutes in a normal session and how often you use the dryer, rather than treating it as a year-round continuous load. Rated power is a scenario input; lower heat or speed settings can draw differently. Compare purchase price, accessories and servicing separately from the electricity estimate.
A common comparison mistake
More watts do not by themselves prove a faster drying time, better styling or less damage. Those comparisons require relevant test evidence. We do not turn a manufacturer's marketing statement into an independent product verdict.
Compare running costs
A hypothetical 1,600 W dryer used for ten minutes, four times a week. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.
Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.
Assumes the stated input for the full session. Actual mode and duration vary; this is not a styling or hair-health test. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.
Your questions answered
Will a lower-wattage dryer always use less electricity per session?
Only if other conditions, especially powered time, are equal. Compare complete sessions that achieve the outcome you need; rated power alone cannot determine their total energy.
Can I calculate a saving from shorter drying time?
Yes, as an assumption: enter the power and both durations in a suitable comparison calculator. Do not claim a model saves that time unless there is evidence for the same task and conditions.
Sources and evidence limits
Source links support the stated buying considerations. Manufacturer material is commercial information, not independent comparative testing. Our editable energy figures are hypothetical and are not taken from these products.
