Electric toothbrushes: buying guide
Compare compatible heads, comfortable controls and recurring costs before extra app features.

Choose an electric toothbrush around the handle and replacement heads you will use consistently. Before comparing premium modes, price a realistic supply of compatible heads and check the charging arrangement. This guide compares ownership features and electricity assumptions, not clinical outcomes. Advice from your dental professional about your own routine is separate from choosing an appliance and calculating what its charger uses.
Which type suits your home?
Rechargeable handle
Compare the charger footprint, controls and travel arrangement. Battery runtime claims depend on test conditions; check the stated brushing routine and whether charging time fits your own use.
Connected model
Decide whether you want an app before paying for connected features. Check account requirements, supported phones and which functions remain available without the app or internet connection.
Shared charging arrangement
If buying for a household, check how handles and heads are identified and stored. A multi-handle bundle can include a different number of chargers or travel cases from the individual products pictured.
What to check before buying
Exact head compatibility
Find the manufacturer's compatible head codes for the particular handle series. Similar-looking heads or a familiar brand name do not establish that a replacement pack will fit.
Useful controls
Check timer signals, pressure alerts and how modes are selected. Feature presence is not evidence of a personal health benefit, and the controls should be understandable without a phone.
Replacement and cleaning
Read care instructions for the handle, head and charger. Check whether consumables and service are available locally, and factor their recurring cost into the comparison.
Charging and travel
Read the input requirements on the exact charger. Check whether a travel case charges or only stores the handle, and whether a supplied cable still needs a separate compatible power supply.
What ownership really involves
Compare a one-year basket of the handle and the compatible heads you expect to buy. For electricity, use measured mains energy for a complete charge and the number of charges, adding charger standby separately where relevant. Motor watts and battery capacity are not a direct measure of electricity purchased at the wall.
A common comparison mistake
A small charging bill does not make a costly handle the cheapest ownership option. Replacement-head prices and the features you actually value can dominate the decision, and neither price nor mode count establishes a clinical result.
Compare running costs
A hypothetical 0.01 kWh full mains charging session, once weekly. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.
Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.
Not measured toothbrush consumption. Replace with your charger measurement; continuous charger standby and replacement heads are excluded. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.
Your questions answered
Does every head from the same brand fit?
Check the exact compatibility list for your handle. Product families can use different fittings, so verify the model code before buying a multipack or replacement.
How do I estimate charging electricity?
Enter mains kWh per complete charge and your expected charging frequency. Include standby separately if the charger remains powered; a battery's stored energy alone does not measure charger input.
