Coffee machines: buying guide
Choose a brewing workflow first, then compare coffee, cleaning and ownership costs alongside electricity.

Start with the drinks you actually make and how much preparation you enjoy. Batch filter coffee, a quick pod and a manually prepared espresso solve different problems. Decide whether you need milk drinks, how many cups are made together and who will clean the equipment. A more automated machine is not necessarily a simpler ownership experience.
Which type suits your home?
Filter machine
Consider it for several cups of brewed coffee together. Check carafe size, the smallest practical batch and how long any hotplate operates after brewing.
Pod or capsule system
Useful when a repeatable single serving is the priority. Compare ongoing capsule availability and price, compatible formats and the practical route for used capsules.
Espresso or bean-to-cup
Choose between hands-on preparation and automation. Check grinder requirements, milk cleaning and removable components rather than selecting solely by a headline pressure or drink count.
What to check before buying
Your daily drink pattern
Compare a whole morning's workflow: heat-up, brewing, milk preparation and cleaning. A per-shot figure alone can hide energy used while the machine waits between drinks.
Consumable spending
Calculate coffee or capsule cost per drink using the amounts you actually use. Add filters, cleaning products and milk-system consumables before comparing an inexpensive machine with a premium one.
Water and maintenance
Read how the model handles local water hardness and descaling. Check what must be bought separately and whether the required tasks fit your normal routine.
Access and dimensions
Allow room to refill water, empty waste and remove the drip tray beneath your cupboards. Check cup height with the drinks and mugs you use, including taller milk drinks.
What ownership really involves
Electricity is only one part of the total. Work out annual servings and consumables before paying for connected features or a large drink menu. Compare warranty terms and the availability of service for the exact machine and grinder.
A common comparison mistake
Do not use the heater's rated watts for a full day's standby estimate. Measure the complete session or obtain documented standby input. Manufacturer taste or performance language is not evidence that this site has tested a machine.
Compare running costs
An invented 0.05kWh complete brewing session, repeated fourteen times a week. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.
Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.
This is a hypothetical mains-energy input, not energy measured for a coffee or model. Include milk heating, warm-up and waiting periods where relevant. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.
Your questions answered
Are beans always cheaper than capsules?
That depends on your coffee choice, dose, waste and machine cost. Compare your actual price per usable drink over the period you expect to own the machine; electricity alone cannot settle the question.
What is the most useful energy measurement?
A complete, repeatable session including heat-up and the same number of drinks. If the machine stays on between sessions, measure that separately and include it in the annual total.
