Kettles: buying guide

Choose a kettle by minimum fill, comfortable handling and the amount of water you actually boil.

Start by writing down your smallest and largest normal boil. A kettle that comfortably makes one drink and an occasional larger round may suit you better than a large, feature-heavy model. Compare the minimum fill mark, usable capacity and the space available under your cupboards before looking at finishes or app controls.

Which type suits your home?

Simple boil-only kettle

A useful starting point when you mainly want boiling water. Compare lid access, level markings and how comfortably you can lift a filled kettle.

Variable-temperature kettle

Consider it if you will regularly select lower temperatures. Check the available settings and whether the kettle remembers or automatically changes them.

Hot-water dispenser

Treat this as a separate use case: verify the smallest dispense volume, temperature and cleaning routine rather than assuming it behaves like a normal kettle.

What to check before buying

  1. Minimum fill

Read the actual model's minimum marking, not just its maximum litres. If one drink requires a much larger fill, your everyday pattern may be a poor fit.

  2. Lifting and pouring

Check empty weight, grip, lid opening and the balance of a filled kettle. A comfortable handle in a photograph is not proof that it suits your hand.

  3. Worktop fit

Allow room to lift the kettle off its base and open its lid. Check cord routing and the manufacturer's placement instructions before committing to a particular corner.

  4. Scale and spare parts

Find the cleaning instructions and check whether the removable filter or lid parts can be replaced. Treat vague claims about maintenance-free use cautiously in a hard-water area.

What ownership really involves

Compare purchase price with how often you will use temperature selection or keep-warm. A premium finish may be worthwhile aesthetically, but do not count it as an electricity saving. Include any consumable filters in your ownership budget.

A common comparison mistake

Do not infer the cost of a boil from watts alone. Water quantity, starting temperature and time matter. Follow the exact minimum and maximum fill limits; reducing water below the permitted minimum is not a saving strategy.

YOUR NUMBERS, YOUR ESTIMATE

Compare running costs

A hypothetical 3,000W kettle used for two minutes, twice a day. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.

Scenario A / year£18.2072.80 kWh · £1.52 per calendar month
Scenario B / year£18.2072.80 kWh · £1.52 per calendar month

Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.

This is a worked example, not an average kettle measurement. Replace the duration with a timed or measured boil at your own fill level; keep-warm is excluded. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.

Your questions answered

Does a higher wattage mean a higher bill?

Not on its own. Compare the energy for the same quantity of water reaching the same temperature. A higher input used for less time is not directly comparable with a lower input used longer.

Should I pay extra for keep-warm?

Only if it fits your routine. Ask how long you need hot water available and compare complete measured sessions, including the holding period, rather than considering the initial boil alone.
