CLEANING / BEFORE YOU BUY

Vacuum cleaners: buying guide

Choose around your floors, stairs and storage, then compare consumables and charging costs.

Start by listing the surfaces you clean and the parts of the job you find awkward. A lightweight cleaner that reaches the stairs may be more useful than a powerful-looking model that stays in the cupboard. Compare complete machines with the floor head and accessories you need, rather than treating motor watts as a cleaning-performance score.

Which type suits your home?

Corded upright or cylinder

Check cable reach, turning space and the weight you actually lift. Try to distinguish the weight of the complete machine from that of a detached handheld unit when comparing specifications.

Cordless stick

Read runtime conditions carefully, including the power setting and whether a powered floor head was attached. Ask about battery replacement and the charging space needed, rather than assuming headline runtime covers your whole home.

Handheld cleaner

Useful for small tasks, but assess whether its bin, attachments and reach suit your main cleaning job. Buying a second cleaner adds storage and maintenance even when its charging cost is small.

What to check before buying

  1. Floor-head suitability

Check the manufacturer's guidance for your carpets, hard floors and delicate surfaces. Compare the included head, height adjustment and brush maintenance rather than a generic claim that the machine suits every floor.

  2. Handling and access

Consider stairs, under-furniture clearance, switches and how the bin is emptied. A specification cannot establish whether a grip or trigger is comfortable for you during a complete cleaning session.

  3. Consumables and service

Find the exact bag, filter and battery codes before buying. Check replacement prices and availability, plus whether filters are washable and how long they must dry according to the manual.

  4. Comparable energy figures

For a cordless cleaner, use electricity measured at the wall during charging. Battery capacity and motor power are different quantities and cannot by themselves establish the electricity purchased from your supplier.

What ownership really involves

Write down bags, filters, brush rolls and any likely battery replacement alongside the purchase price. For a corded cleaner, model active watts and cleaning time. For a cordless cleaner, count complete charging sessions and consider dock standby separately. Compare equivalent cleaning jobs; the lowest electricity figure does not establish cleaning quality.

A common comparison mistake

Do not infer stronger pickup or better filtration from a larger wattage number. Those claims need comparable evidence, and we have not independently tested the models in a retailer's catalogue.

YOUR NUMBERS, YOUR ESTIMATE

Compare running costs

A hypothetical 0.08 kWh full charging session, three times a week. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.

Scenario A / year£3.1212.48 kWh · £0.26 per calendar month
Scenario B / year£3.1212.48 kWh · £0.26 per calendar month

Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.

Not measured vacuum consumption. Enter wall-meter input for your charging job; continuous dock standby is excluded. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.

Your questions answered

Can I use battery watt-hours as charging consumption?

Use a mains measurement where possible. Battery energy is not the same as charger input, and partial charges, charging losses and dock standby change the amount bought from the grid.

Should I choose bagged or bagless?

Compare emptying, storage and consumable requirements for your routine. Bagless does not mean maintenance-free, while bagged models need the correct replacement bags. Neither format guarantees better cleaning.
