Robot vacuum cleaners: buying guide

Assess navigation, thresholds, dock space and replacement parts before paying for automation.

A robot cleaner is a purchase about the layout and routine of your home. Sketch the rooms it should reach, the floor transitions and a permanent dock location before comparing features. Decide which tasks you expect it to reduce and which you will still do yourself. An automated schedule is useful only if the robot can complete the relevant route.

Which type suits your home?

Robot with a charging dock

Check the bin-emptying routine and dock clearance in the manual. A small-looking base still needs accessible floor space, a suitable power point and a route the robot can reliably reach.

Self-emptying system

Compare the base size, compatible bags and the steps for clearing blockages. Automatic emptying changes one part of maintenance; it does not remove the need to inspect brushes, sensors and wheels.

Vacuum-and-mop system

Establish which floors and rugs it may encounter, how water is controlled and what pad care involves. Check the exact model's carpet-handling instructions rather than assuming every combined cleaner lifts its mop.

What to check before buying

  1. Route and obstacles

Measure thresholds and under-furniture gaps, and check the published limits. Think about loose cables, toys and chair legs. A navigation feature name is not evidence that every obstruction will be recognised.

  2. Dock and ongoing supplies

List bags, filters, brushes, mop pads and any specified cleaning solution. Compare the total replacement basket and cleaning routine, including how the base tanks are filled and emptied.

  3. Controls and privacy

Find out whether scheduling, maps or remote access require an account, internet connection or subscription. Read the privacy information for the exact product, especially if it uses cameras or shares maps.

  4. Repair route

Check battery and wheel availability, warranty collection arrangements and support in the UK. Save the model identifier so accessories and replacement parts are matched to the correct revision.

What ownership really involves

Include the entire base station in an electricity measurement. A run followed by recharge is a useful repeatable job, while idle dock energy needs a separate allowance. Avoid treating battery watt-hours as a complete mains-consumption figure. The value of automated cleaning depends on useful completed jobs, not simply the number of scheduled starts.

A common comparison mistake

A robot is not automatically a replacement for stairs, upholstery or awkward corners. Compare it with the tasks it can actually perform rather than assuming it eliminates every other cleaning appliance.

YOUR NUMBERS, YOUR ESTIMATE

Compare running costs

A hypothetical 0.06 kWh cleaning-and-recharge job, five times weekly. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.

Scenario A / year£3.9015.60 kWh · £0.32 per calendar month
Scenario B / year£3.9015.60 kWh · £0.32 per calendar month

Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.

An editable example, not a product test. Dock standby and extra automatic washing or drying outside the measured job are excluded. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.

Your questions answered

Does every robot need an app?

No single rule covers all models. Check which functions work through physical controls and which require an app or account before buying, including what happens if the internet is unavailable.

How should I compare electricity costs?

Measure an equivalent cleaning run and its recharge at the wall. Include base-station activity during that job, then add standby separately if the base remains powered between runs.
