Electric heaters: buying guide

Compare portable heater controls and room use, with a clear seasonal cost calculation.

Define the room, occupied hours and existing heating before buying a portable electric heater. It may provide heat where you need it, but the purchase does not establish that your total household bill will fall. Compare controls, placement requirements and the heat output required for your particular use. A different casing or advertising name is not enough evidence for an electricity-saving claim.

Which type suits your home?

Fan heater

Consider airflow, fan noise and the controls you will use while the room is occupied. Check the permitted placement and operating conditions in the exact manual before deciding where it can stand.

Convector heater

Compare thermostat controls, timer behaviour and the available floor or wall arrangements. If wall mounting is offered, check the exact fitting instructions and what installation work is included in the quoted price.

Oil-filled radiator

Assess footprint, weight and the practical controls. Heat retained after switching off is part of the earlier electricity input; it is not free energy or proof that the appliance provides more heat per purchased unit.

What to check before buying

  1. Power and control range

Compare heat settings and thermostat operation. Rated input describes a powered setting, while room conditions and cycling determine how long that input is drawn during your session.

  2. Room and timing

Write down the occupied hours and active weeks rather than assuming year-round use. A timer is helpful only when it matches your routine and the operating instructions allow the intended use.

  3. Placement and operation

Read the model's requirements for clearances, sockets and permitted locations. Do not apply a generic distance or operating rule to every design, and do not use a heater for tasks its manual prohibits.

  4. Usability and support

Check display readability, button access, movement when cool and warranty arrangements. A connected feature can add app or account requirements without changing the amount of heat your room needs.

What ownership really involves

Use a seasonal schedule and distinguish full-power hours from elapsed time under thermostat control. The example assumes 20 weeks of use and excludes standing charges. It estimates the appliance's electricity only, not the cost of a whole-home heating strategy or any reduction in another fuel bill.

A common comparison mistake

Do not assume a portable resistance heater guarantees cheaper heating because it is described as economical. Compare equivalent comfort, occupied rooms and measured total energy before making a household saving claim.

YOUR NUMBERS, YOUR ESTIMATE

Compare running costs

A hypothetical 2,000 W heater at full input for two hours daily over 20 weeks. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.

Scenario A / year£140.00560.00 kWh · £11.67 per calendar month
Scenario B / year£140.00560.00 kWh · £11.67 per calendar month

Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.

Seasonal full-power scenario. Thermostat cycling and room heat demand vary; this does not predict whole-home savings. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.

Your questions answered

Does a 1 kW heater always cost half as much as a 2 kW heater?

For equal full-power running time at the same tariff, the electricity cost is half. That does not establish equal comfort or the same running duration in a real room.

What should I enter for thermostat cycling?

Use measured kWh for a representative session if available. Otherwise treat rated watts multiplied by powered hours as a scenario, and do not present it as a measured average.
