Dehumidifiers: buying guide

Compare extraction conditions, room temperature, tank handling and seasonal electricity use.

Define the moisture problem and the room before choosing a dehumidifier. Record the normal temperature, where water collects and whether you need help drying laundry or controlling general humidity. A headline litres-per-day figure comes with test conditions; it is not a promise of how much water the machine will collect in your room. Deal with underlying leaks or building defects separately.

Which type suits your home?

Compressor design

Compare extraction data at temperatures and humidity levels relevant to the intended room. Do not compare a warm, humid test figure with another model's cooler-condition result as though they describe the same job.

Desiccant design

Consider the manufacturer's stated operating range, electrical input and controls alongside extraction. There is no universal winner for every room: assess the conditions where the appliance will actually operate.

Continuous-drain arrangement

Useful only when the installation and hose route meet the manual's requirements. Check whether the intended setup relies on gravity or includes a pump rather than assuming any hose can run uphill.

What to check before buying

  1. Conditions behind the numbers

Look for temperature and relative humidity beside extraction and power figures. Ask for comparable data if the specification supplies only a maximum headline capacity.

  2. Tank handling

Check tank access, full-tank behaviour and the weight of the water you will carry. Consider whether removing the tank requires moving the entire appliance out of its normal position.

  3. Controls and placement

Compare humidistat settings, timers and restart behaviour. Follow the model's clearance instructions and think about where air can circulate, rather than hiding it in a cupboard to reduce visible clutter.

  4. Noise and upkeep

Read noise figures with their fan settings and test context. Check filter access, cleaning instructions and warranty service; the setting you can tolerate may differ from the one used for the headline extraction figure.

What ownership really involves

Estimate active weeks per year as well as hours per day. The example below assumes 26 weeks, so it is not a year-round daily average. Humidistat cycling and changing room conditions affect real consumption. Count maintenance and any consumables separately; collected litres alone are not a complete measure of purchase value.

A common comparison mistake

A dehumidifier does not establish or repair the cause of damp. Do not assume its purchase guarantees a particular bill saving or compare extraction figures without their test conditions.

YOUR NUMBERS, YOUR ESTIMATE

Compare running costs

A hypothetical 200 W machine used four hours daily during 26 weeks of the year. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.

Scenario A / year£36.40145.60 kWh · £3.03 per calendar month
Scenario B / year£36.40145.60 kWh · £3.03 per calendar month

Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.

Continuous input during the entered hours. Humidistat cycling and room conditions can change actual use; no damp-treatment or savings guarantee. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Seasonal estimate uses active weeks × uses per active week; 52 weeks is 364 days. A and B share the same usage assumptions.

Your questions answered

Is the biggest litres-per-day number the best choice?

Compare the room conditions, operating range, controls and practical handling first. A maximum extraction number under one test condition does not predict performance in every home.

Can I calculate a guaranteed laundry saving?

No. You would need comparable measured electricity for the same laundry and drying outcome, including any extra heating or ventilation. Our example estimates only the entered appliance consumption.
