Fridge-freezers: buying guide

Match fresh/frozen storage, door clearance and annual kWh to your kitchen and shopping pattern.

Start with how you divide shopping between fresh and frozen food. The same total storage volume can be split very differently, so compare each compartment's usable space before looking at appearance. Then check the complete installation footprint and annual energy figure. A physically larger appliance is not automatically a better fit for a household that shops little and often.

Which type suits your home?

Conventional combination

Compare the fridge/freezer split with your normal food storage. Check drawer access and shelf layout using the containers and packages you actually buy, not only the total litres.

Wide or multi-door format

Assess the required width, delivery route and door opening in use. Check whether any dispenser requires additional installation or consumables that are not included in the cabinet price.

Separate fridge and freezer

Consider this if independent locations or storage proportions solve a real problem. Compare the combined purchase price and annual energy of both appliances rather than only one headline label.

What to check before buying

  1. Compartment proportions

Compare usable fresh and frozen volumes separately. An attractive total can still leave too little room for your usual frozen shopping, or devote space to a compartment you rarely need.

  2. Door and drawer opening

Check the manufacturer's clearances and the angle needed to remove drawers. Include nearby walls, handles and islands; a cabinet fitting the gap does not prove the interior can be accessed properly.

  3. Annual energy and size

Compare annual kWh alongside compartment volumes and the functions supplied. Do not multiply the compressor's input by every hour in the year; the product sheet or measured energy is the better starting point.

  4. Location and maintenance

Verify the permitted room conditions and cleaning access. Check defrost arrangements, drain or water requirements and replacement costs for any filters before choosing a dispenser or specialist storage feature.

What ownership really involves

Add delivery, installation, door changes where offered and disposal to the upfront quote. Treat dispenser filters and service costs separately. For a replacement decision, compare the energy difference with the whole installed premium, not only a promotional appliance price.

A common comparison mistake

An efficiency letter does not tell you whether the appliance has the storage mix you need. Avoid comparing a large multi-door fridge-freezer with a small conventional model as if their service and capacity were identical.

YOUR NUMBERS, YOUR ESTIMATE

Compare running costs

A hypothetical annual label value of 220kWh for one fridge-freezer. These are hypothetical starting figures, not a measured product average. Scenario B starts equal to A: change it to your alternative's documented figure.

Scenario A / year£55.00220.00 kWh · £4.58 per calendar month
Scenario B / year£55.00220.00 kWh · £4.58 per calendar month

Annual difference: £0.00. Equal under these assumptions.

This is an invented label example. Actual conditions and use can differ; annual energy already includes the label's yearly basis and is not multiplied by cycles. Electricity only; excludes standing charges and purchase costs. Monthly figures spread annual cost over 12 calendar months. Annual-label figures already cover a year. A and B share the same usage assumptions.

Your questions answered

Should I choose a 50/50 or another split?

Match the separate usable volumes to your shopping pattern and kitchen needs. The best split is the one you can use effectively, not a universal ratio that suits every household.

Can a lower annual kWh justify replacing a working model?

Calculate the annual electricity difference at your tariff, then compare it with the installed purchase cost and other reasons for replacement. Do not assume the energy saving alone guarantees a short payback.
